My grandpa, Dean Jefferies, was a member of the USS DeHaven Sailors Association. He talked about it all the time and getting to learn about the ship and the association through this website is like getting to talk to him all over again. I miss him. Thank you for having this opportunity for me to feel close to him again.

It was my pleasure to learn the the true Navy ways on a "Bath Boat" I wanted to thank the ship builders during our stop to tour Maine and we tied up just down river of the yards where DeHaven was built and carry out the long traditions of the Yard. A Harty ship she was even in 1970-71 when I got my sea-legs during my first WESPAC.

I was sorry to learn of the passage of Juan Rebollido, and remember him as a real gentleman with a good sense of humor and a pleasure to work with - a real straight shooter. I was the Supply Officer during his tenure and greatly appreciated his skills and many contributions during two Westpac tours.

Hello, my Dad served on the USS DeHaven from 1945 - 1947. I have been sorting through pictures from his photo albums and other artifacts. I wanted to see if anyone with the USS DeHaven Sailors Association would be interested in these items. I did check with the WWII museum in New Orleans and the Nat Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg. They are limiting what they take and the Fredericksburg Museum is not taking anything currently because of a series of roof leaks threatening their collection. Please let me know if anyone is interested.

I had the pleasure of attending another DeHaven reunion last week (September 2023) this one in Rapid City, SD. This was my 3rd reunion in a row, I'm starting to get the hang of it now. I got to tell you, Dave Looker and Jim Riggens plus others put on one heck of a program. Rushmore, Deadwood and our visit to Dances With Wolves filming site and dinner show where outstanding. Great job to all the folks that put the events together. The ladies of the reunion did another outstanding job. Money raised for the scholarship program, love the silent auction, goodies and treats for the local vets, what an excellent job. And of course, we cannot thank Looker enough for finding us a great golf course. The Elks course in Rapid City was a winner. I personally think the Bull Sessions around the long table in the Hospitality Room in the evening were the best. My daughter sitting nearby was smiling and laughing at the same time as the stories were told. I know she felt proud to be attending with dad and being welcomed by the old salts. Next year Branson, MO. Both my daughter and I plan on attending, if health and other issues do not rear their ugly heads. I hope more shipmates can make it next year. Missed Don Kovacs, Jim Smuda and Bill Knopf this year. Always great to see and talk to the shipmates I served directly with in CIC. Maybe next year. Again a hearty "Well Done" and thank you. My uncle Ernest F. Brown served on USS DeHaven DD-469. He was killed on February 1, 1943. I never met him as my mom was only a child at that time. She spoke of him fondly and always mourned his loss. I spent 31 years serving in the Army Reserve as he was an inspiring figure of service and sacrifice to our great nation. It has been 80 years since his passing and I would like to honor his memory on this Memorial Day in 2023.

My uncle, Lt.Robert W.James served aboard the De Haven during the 1950's. He had great storys regarding the ship and crew. In 1953, when I was 10 years old the ship was tied up third ship out, had to go through the ward rooms of the other two destroyers to get to the De Haven's ward room. This was in Long Beach, California. Uncle Bob gave my Dad, brother and me the grand tour. Bob passed away in 2000.

Sad news for shipmates that were onboard 1972-1973. Merle Edwards, CS3, passed away Sept 30, 2022. I don't fine Merle listed on our roster however he was a true DeHaven Shipmate. Obituary Merle David Edwards, 69, of New Holstein, passed away Sept 30, 2022. Merle was born June 12, 1953, in Sheboygan to the late Ruth (Lubbers) and William Edwards. He attended Cedar Grove schools and Lakeshore Technical upon high school graduation. He served in the Navy as a cook—perfecting his cooking skills on rough seas. For a number of years Merle worked for the Bemis company and for a U.S. company based in China where he found an appreciation for Asian foods and Chinese culture. He was working for the Plymouth School District at the time of his death. Merle had an adventurous spirit and he experimented with various foods both in his cooking and gardening. He enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting and was a devoted Green Bay Packer fan. Merle is survived by his son, Andrew and grandchildren Logan and Addison, of Walden, N.Y., his step-daughter, Audra Duby his step-son, Steve Duby, and step-grandchildren Lesenia Fish, Tyler Duby and Derek Duby. He is further survived by his sisters Margaret Heinen and Mary (Duane) Wilterdink of Centennial, Colorado and brother, Michael (Julie) Edwards of Waukesha, Wisconsin. A Celebration of his life will be held on October 9, 2022, at Holidays Pub and Grill on Superior Ave in Sheboygan WI from 8:30-11:30. Come cheer on the Packers with his spirit! In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sheboygan County. Donations are accepted online at www.bbbswishoreline.org or mail to BBBS, 632 N. 8th Street, Unit 2, Sheboygan, WI 53081

A great 2022 reunion! Another year has passed and I am looking forward to a repeat in 2023 in Rapid City, South Dakota. I implore those that could not attend to give serious consideration to attending the 2023 reunion. As each year passes attendance diminishes. We must address this issue and make a serious effort to reach out to those members who have never participated. Our membership is what holds us together as one. So, as an association, it is our obligation to reach out to those who make up the voice of those who cannot be heard. I say let's make a consolidated effort to maximize attendance at our next reunion. It's incumbent that we all join together so that all can hear and tell of our story. I do remember my first burial at sea onboard DeHaven. We all were in our dress whites and mustered on the fantail for the event. I believe it was for a veterans' request to be buried at sea. Since that time, Taps has always been a emotional event for me. It has been a long time ago but I seem to remember we sent two caskets to rest in Davy Jones Locker that day.

After receiving the latest Raven DeHaven, I did a little reminiscing about my short time on the USS DeHaven, February 1968 to October 1968. My favorite memories are from the cruise from Yokosuka to San Diego via Australia and New Zealand. During that cruise, the DeHavem embarked a civilian oceanographer who was using this opportnity to verify various shallow charted areas reported previously over many years including some from the Royal Navy in the nineteenth century. I learned much from this professional map maker. While recalling this cruise, I remembered an alarming moment on the bridge when the fathometer suddenly went from over 1000 fathoms to less than 100 fathoms. Slowly the ship, advanced to eventually crossing this uncharted shoal at 10 fathoms. The oceanographer was encouraged to name this shoal, Dehaven Shoal. Today on a whim, I did a search for DeHaven Shoal. From December 1968, I found an article in the New York Times describing this event. The photo has the Captains signature and caption on the backside, the Commanding Officer was CDR Joe D. Edwards. Deeply saddened to hear the passing of George Hofius. We worked together in the electronic counter measures room located in the combat information center “ECM.” This tiny room known as “the vault” was extremely tight when we were at general quarters. George was extremely professional and carried more than just his weight as we steamed off the coast of North and South Vietnam. He was one of only three other sailors to be awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with the combat “V” distinguishing device. I salute both Mr. James Smuda and Mr.Jim Auer for recognizing George's intense commitment to the overall intelligence effort in Vietnam. I for one will miss his presence at the reunions

My dad, Kenneth Dymmel served on the DeHaven from '52 - '56. He absolutely loved those years in the Navy & he shared many stories with us growing up. He was lifeguard, mailman & cut hair on deck to make spending $$ during their 3 tours to Japan, Hong Kong, & Philippines! I am starting to scan all his slides from those tours including the infamous Typhoon when they lost a sailor overboard! Anyone who served at that time?...my Dad would love to hear from you. He is turning 88 yrs. in July & battling Parkinson's. God bless you all for your sacrifice for our freedom!

If anyone knows of a reputable literary agent who is willing to give me a shot, I want to make the name "De Haven" live in fiction novels. I was working on these novels before Trump ever coined the term "Space Force". These novels are about a REAL space force, man's first attempt to look beyond the solar system I write about the "De Haven"-class destroyers (SDD-1, yes, these are all space ships), "Texas-Class" battleships (SBB-1), "St. Louis"- class heavy cruisers, and more! There's intrigue, action (from fist fights to heavy ship-to-ship fighting, and even love! I'm already published (2016), but I want to find a better publisher, which means I need an agent.

: Jim, I can't tell you how happy I am about you finally securing the benefits that you have so gallantly fought for. It's about time! I have monitored the progress and the disposition of the Blue Water Act since its inception. This fight for deserved protection and relief has gone on for too long a time. HR Bill 299 has been bounced around more than once and it's encouraging to see that the House has passed it unanimously 410 to 0. It is now Senate Bill 1195. Its disposition is in the hands of the Committee On Veterans Affairs. This legislative group consists of seventeen senators who will decide if the bill should move to the floor of the senate for approval. It was shot down last time at this level by two senators with the reason being "it was too expensive." These two legislative jewels could not possibly have any kind of conscience. Hopefully, our members who read the logs will become more active in voicing their demand for justice. I encourage those who read b! oth yours and my log entry take a more active position in calling those senators listed on the Committee. This information is on the web and one simply has to search for SB1195 and they will be taken to the list of those senators on this Committee. Just because their senator is not named on this list doesn't mean that they should not call their senator. I know I have used the term critically imperative before, but this is it gentlemen. If the Committee On Veterans Affairs does not get the bill to the senate floor...there will be no vote. Those who served between 1966 - 1968 are relatively safe because we steamed up the rivers a few times. Let us not forget about those sailors who were there with us within the twelve nautical mile threshold established but, never had the chance to get their fins wet up river as we did. This bill should cover not just us but, everybody who even consumed the water that was thought to be safe after the desalination process. For those who have r! ead my log plus Jim's it's time. Not just for you but, for you! r other brothers also.

The following may help other Shipmates who served on the DeHaven during the summer and fall of 1965. I just received official correspondence from the VA Appeals Board stating….. “Accordingly, the Board of Veterans Appeals finds that the criteria for entitlement to service connection for prostate cancer, to include residuals, have been met”. This follows a 5-year struggle to have the VA acknowledge the connection between my service in the territorial waters of Vietnam nearly 55 years ago and incurring one of the 13 diseases associated with exposure to Agent Orange and other herbicides. This became possible due to the Federal Appeals Court decision rendered earlier this year known as Procopio vs. Wilke. This ruling became the land of the land and requires the VA to once again honor the Agent Orange Act of 1991 that they decided to ignore in 2002 when they chose to eliminate ‘Blue Water Navy Veterans’ from consideration for having been exposed to Agent Orange unless you went ashore or served deep in the inland waters of South Vietnam. I thought I would share this great news with those DeHaven Shipmates who might now be, or could be in the future, in a similar situation to mine, if you were onboard the DeHaven in the period of June to Oct. 1965, and acquired one of the diseases presumed to have been caused by your exposure to Agent Orange and other herbicides. At many points I wanted to give up and say, ‘the hell with the VA and the process of trying to get this approved’, but because of the tireless efforts of shipmate Tom Dam, RM2, the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Association, and Military Veterans Advocacy, we prevailed in the Appeals Court by a vote of 9-2 to require the VA to grant AO presumption if your ship was within the territorial waters of South Vietnam – defined as 12 nm from the baseline seaward. This ruling and my successful appeal will result in the DeHaven being added to the VA’s Approved List for Ships Associated with Service in Vietnam and Exposure to Herbicide Agents several dates during the period noted above. If I can provide any additional background or assistance on this important topic please drop me a note. Jim Remillard, RM3, USN, USS DeHaven DD-727 from Oct. 1963 to the end of 1965.

Sadly, on April 19th of 2019 a very great man and DeHaven shipmate, Tom Dam, RM2 who served on the Dehaven during 1963 to 1964 passed away from complications related to several diseases attributed to his exposure to Agent Orange in Sept. 1963 while on board. Tom was responsible for doing the research to get the Ship's Logs on to the website, if I have things correct, for the period that he was on board and for some additional periods. He was instrumental in getting the DeHaven listed on the VA's Approved Ship's List for having been exposed to Agent Orange in August and September of 1963. Wonderful friend and shipmate. Fair winds and smooth sailing, Tom.

I can't remember if it was 1954 or 55, but we put into Guam on the way over to duty with the 7th fleet. We were on the edge of a typhoon and the wind blew us over a buoy. For the rest of the way to Japan we could only do about 5 knots. We tried to do a little better but the vibration loosened all the bolts on #1 main generator. When we got to Japan there were no dry-docks available, so we ended up in the Philippines. They changed out the starboard propeller. One blade was bent flat against the shaft.

Fellow ship mates of Harry G. Stuart, My late husband, Harry G. Stuart served on the USS DeHaven 1968-1971 as a Boiler Tech. He passed away Nov. 25, 2016 from complications from Coronary Artery Disease and Respiratory Failure due to asbestos exposure along with Diabetes. He passed away 2 weeks after we put in his claim with the VA. Now I, as his widow, am trying to receive some small monthly benefit. I have been denied twice since he was a "Blue Water Sailor". I am appealing again which will go to Washington and probably take some time. If anyone out there can give me some insight, help or let me know where all you were in Vietnam during these years, I would deeply appreciate it. Harry was a fine man and I miss him much. Feel free to e-mail me or facebook a private message to me. Thanks, Dede Stuart; dedestuart@yahoo.com

I never had a problem with any of the officers aboard the DeHaven, with the exception of EJ Gueguierre Lt. he pretty much treated me like crap, he was a first class SOB and I'm sure if he is still alive, he is still a first class SOB, all the other officers were great.

I am 89 years old and I just wanted to tell you my story. My uncle John DiLucca was on the USS DeHaven when it was sunk by the Japs on Feb 1st 1943. He was 39 years old and was machinists mate 1st class. I think he was the oldent crew member at the time. Many died that day. One of the Senior Officers wrote a very nice tribute. also a ist of the men they lost. I was his only niece and loved him dearly. To those of you who served, Thank You for your time spent defending this great country of ours. My love and prayers to you all. The USS DeHaven was built in the ship yard of Maine, it was the second ship with that name. Bless you all. Kay

The "Blue Water Navy Vietnam Act" House Bill HR-969 & Senate Bill 1629 is now working its way through the various committe and sub-committe bodies. It would behoove us all to voice our intense support for the passage of the act by making contact with the senators and congressman representing the districts we live in. I can't emphasize the importance of this legislation as it will surely impact us all at some point in time in our lives. It's incumbent upon us all to make the necessary contacts "NOW" versus tomorrow. This is the last ditch effort by the house and the senate to push this legislation through and make it law. If not for us....then for who? I was at one time chairman of Newt Gingrich's aviation sub committee in Washingon. I know how passage of bills work. Please, don't let this last opportunity for our brothers and sisters in arms pass us by...not now.

The 2015 DeHaven Reunion. Did I mention our Southwestern barbecue hosted by owners Jim £ Susan Smuda? What a presentation! One of Albuquerque's finest restaurants. Dinner at the "Casa de Sluggo." With a "Zagat" rating of five it's an establishment you don't want to miss! The barbecue was fantastic. Although their signature meal "Rack of Roadrunner" was not presented that evening (roadrunner was out of season...it's the state bird) we all enjoyed a true unique gastronomic delight! A five star rating on "Trip Advisor" also says it all! Looking back at our wonderful experience I would suggest that Jim...AKA "SLUGGO" wait until the next morning to extinguish all the lanterns burning. It's much safer that way.

What a great reunion! They seem to get better every year. Many of the regulars to be seen and some new faces from the past. Albuquerque NM was a great location with many things to do. One of the highlights was "the band" from 66-68 played a lot of great hits for all attending the banquet. The association lives on as Jim Fuller and David Looker stepped forward to assume those vacated vacancies of the executive branch of the association. Lots of work ahead for both. Bob Yapp...as usual...also stepped forward. We will truly miss Jim and Judy Riggen...Scott and Gloria Martin....what a job they've done for all of us! I implore all to say "thank you" for keeping our spirits alive and memories in tact. Next year is Fairfax, VA. Make plans now! Don't be left behind! You can't get back yesterday and tomorrow is "up for grabs." Please, give serious consideration to the 2016 reunion. You won't be disappointed!

What a great 2014 reunion! I can't wait until the 2015 reunion and I openly invite all those in the "OI" division who served on board DeHaven from 1965-1968 to please attend! Fun will be had by all! So block that first week in September of 2015 to join us. Time goes by much faster than we think and this year is a classic example. After receiving the news of Gerry Gandy passing away during the reunion it served as a very important reminder that none of us may have a tomorrow so we had better live life today. Only now do I recognize that my closest friends were those I served with on board the DeHaven. Not just from the "OI" division but from all the divisions. I hold close to me those friendships that will last forever.

I served aboard the DeHaven 65 - 68 as a Radarman. This is not the usual entry, but my son, Cullen, is an opera singer and has recently been chosen to play Ralph Rackshaw at the Virginia Opera's production of HMS Penafore. Don't know how many of you have seen the Gilbert and Sullivan show before, but it is a rousing nautical comedy. They are in rehearsal now for curtain up in November. I know that there are a lot of Virginians in the association. Check it out if you can, mates.

My brother, Mitchell "Mitch", served aboard DeHaven some time between 1956-1959. He also served aboard Collett in the same time period. I believe he was in the deck force. I served as an electrician aboard Isbell(869) for 2 years and O'Bannon (DD-450) for 5 years. This is a great site.

I enjoyed the Raven DeHaven Mail Call of February 2014. I especially liked Tom Foley’s A Sailor’s Thoughts. Having bunked below the mess decks in the Operations compartment, the one about never walking between the projector and the movie screen after the flick has started really made me remember all the boos when we had to take a shower or go on watch. One I thought should be mentioned was the difference between a fairy tale and a sea story. The first one starts off “once upon a time,” the other “this ain’t no s_ _t.” Ken Columbia, April 66-Dec 68

I have a letter postmarked Toyko Bay 2 Sep 45 from a crew member. Enclosed is a personal letter and a ship's letter describing the days event. A historical event recorded. My father was in the "fly over" of aircraft noted in the letter. While in Tokyo Bay, he was awarded the DFC and an Air Medal for a previous event; my dad's brother was present for the presentation. He was an army aviation crew member (Bombadier) also in the "fly over". My father illustrated a small book titled "Peter Bogey Mike". It was about VP-208.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with James Smuda and his sweet wife, Susan, at their home in Albuquerque, NM. He was the head of 'OI' Division aboard the Dirty D during the 60's while I was aboard. Hell of an officer that didn't have to command respect, but the squids aboard gave it freely. Wonderful officer and great man. He is retired from the navy after 28 years service. I wish there was a way in the ships log to provide photos.

QM3 65-67 Now turning 68 next week, trying to find a way to retire by selling my company. I never thought we were really exposed to AO till I read the study by the Aussie Navy that concludes we were drinking the Dioxin. Always thought distillation took out everything till I watched my Son-in-law distill a case of home made wine that was in Oak casks into 180 proof alcohol. When I lightly tasted the stuff the Oak came through loud and clear.

Permission to come aboard Sir! I remember seeing the USS DeHaven at anchor in HK Harbour during the late 50's/early 60's - the two(lucky)sevens catching my attention. I would like to thank all who contributed their photographs to the site - especially Scott Martin and George Hofius. My father was in the Royal Navy and served from 1936 until the end of the Korean war, during which time he stopped over in Hong Kong. After leaving the navy, he got a position with the Hong Kong Government, so we all shipped off to HK when I was nine years old in 1954, where I lived until 1964. My school in Kowloon was King George the Fifth School, and despite it's obviously British name, had a student enrollment from 37 different countries - the USA and Canada having around 15-20%. To us Brits, y'all sounded the same.. but having lived in Vancouver BC for 45 years I now know better! Diana (Lincoln) Moyer was one of our American students, as were her two brothers Rob and Scott. Although we are now scattered all over the globe, we have a thriving alumnii association, and have held re-unions in California, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Bangkok, Sydney, London - and, of course, Hong Kong. The USS DeHaven web link has been circulated among them, so you should be getting a lot of hits. Scott - thanks so much for the shot of the China Fleet Club. My father worked in the adjoining building (The HK Royal Naval Reserve) for his first nine years there, but I have no picture of it. Problem is - when you live there and see it on a daily basis, you never think to take the photograph. The first restaurant we went to after arriving in HK was in the China Fleet Club. Their curried prawns was the best! Every Saturday I would attend the matinee; a current movie, a newsreel and a Tom & Jerry cartoon (Good Old Fred!!) - all for HK50 cents..such a deal! After that, Ten Pin bowling. My son was especially taken with Norm Bolton's color shots from 1945-46. Most pics from back then are B&W. George - your shot of the old man in a straw hat (hk51) is a classic worthy of National Geographic. You just never see guys like that anymore. Now they all wear Armani Suits. Also - hk98/99 is actually Queen Victoria. We haven't had a Queen Mary since 1558! God bless the USS DeHaven and all who sailed on her - and thanks for the history. Gerald Laishley

I received an email today from a guy I went to school with in Hong Kong in 1962-65. He was forwarding to me an email he had received from another friend that contained a link to a bunch of photos of Hong Kong from the 60s. They were taken by a guy named Scott Martin from the USS DeHaven. I found they were simply great photos, and as the scenery around HK has changed considerably, some are real classics. Like the ones of the Aberdeen boat people and Tiger Balm Gardens that no longer exists. I knew three sailors from the DeHaven that I had met at the beach in Repulse Bay in the 60s. They were Sam Russell, Jim Pitts and Rex Poe. Years ago I wrote in this log and told the story about meeting these guys and our family basically adopting them whenever they came to HK and took them sightseeing, etc. Not long afterward I heard from Sam, and we actually met up for breakfast with his wife in North Canton a few years back and have been in touch off and on since then. ! I have never heard anything about Jim Pitts or Rex Poe. Since I was familiar with your site, I spent several hours this evening looking thru the pictures. It was great fun. I'll be sharing the HK photos taken by George Hofius with my friend now, as they are also great shots. Thanks, guys!!

I would need any feedback by the 23rd of this month. Please let me know if you are interested. I just read the stories of the famous DASH crash in Yokosuka. I had the privelege of standing right next to Ltjg Whitworth that day. I was scheduled to relieve him as DASH Officer, and he was showing me how to conduct a "Torque Neutralization" test. The test was conducted with both umbilicles connected, and a cable tie-down under the drone, with just enough slack to allow the drone to lift off several inches. The test was to ensure equal torque on each of the two counter-rotating blades, so that the drone would hold its heading. Unfortunately, during his pre-test walk-through, Ltjg Whitworth forgot to check the tie-down, which was only partially secure. As he lifted the drone off the deck, suddenly the tie-down popped loose. The drone tried to shoot straight up, but was pulled down on the side facing the pier by the umbilicles. The umbilicles popped loose, and the drone screamed directly at the Admiral's car on the pier. I'll never forget the look at total shock on! Ltjg Whitworth's face. I reached across in front of him and said something like, "Guess we should just turn this thing off." We actually went on during my tour to great success with the drone as a gunfire support platform, under the "Snoopy" program. After DeHaven returned Stateside, I volunteered and was assigned to the DASH test facility at Pax River NAS, where we flew all kinds of experimental equipment on the drone. Years later, I encountered working drones, flying as test beds at the Navy test facility in China Lake....a long way from that day on the Yokosuka pier!

I served on the USS DeHaven (DD-727) for nine months in 1966-67. I was an ETR-2 (Electronics Technician-Radar). We did shore bombardment off the coast of Vietnam. I have photos of our deck awash with spent 5" brass casings. It was a patriotic and fullfilling time in my life to serve my country in the war effort. We had a great Captain (Donald Franz) and crew. I had fun razzing a Lieutenant about his beloved Green Bay Packers. I guess he's been vindicated since then with this year's Superbowl win. My 48th anniversary since joining the Navy was March 11th; I remember it like it was yesterday.

In June of 2010 the VA posted its second list for U.S. Navy ships that were "in country" in Vietnam and may have been exposed to agent orange. The DeHaven isn't on this second list. Has anyone been successful in ascertaining the fact that DeHaven was in fact "in country" when we steamed up the Saigon or Mekong rivers?

I regret to inform the Shipmates of the USS DeHaven, that my Mother, the wife of George H. (Hank) Welbourn of the USS DeHaven, passed on July 28, 2010 at Renown Medical Center in Reno NV at the age of 84. I held her hand, as she slipped quietly from mine into Gods. Mom, had cancer, fighting the fight, but lost to a stroke and heart attack while on a trip, doing what she loved to do, travel, and being with friends. Mom was living with me the last few months of her life, I would not have had it any other way. Mom spoke fondly of Dads Shipmates as did Dad. Some like Plunket, I got to know. May all of your Shipmates past and present, being the Greatest Generation mankind will ever know. I think it is important for you to know, that your sacrifice, knowledge, along with the peace and comfort knowing what you accomplished, have the gratitude of this Son from two wonderful parents and their friends. May God Bless my Mom, my Dad and you.

The DeHaven was awarded the "Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation" for her service on October 4, 1966. Declassified naval gun fire support records indicate only three rounds were fired of 5 inch/.38 ordinance on that date. I have two questions. Why only three rounds and where can a copy of the unit citation be found? Additionally, it appears that only the ribbon can be displayed by those participants of the DeHaven who were on board on that specific date since the authorization for the actual medal is awarded to only individuals who were "in country". This term "in country" has been disputed for quite some time and the government has capitulated on "agent orange" claim litigation for those who were also conduction operations on rivers that were "in country" and for those who flew in airspace over Vietnam. However it doesn't look like this criteria applies towards the "awards application." I would appreciate as much feedback on this as possible.

My Great Grandfather, Edwin DeHaven whom the ship was named after. His son Col. Louis G DeHaven was on Guadalcanal when she was sunk. My Mother Helen Sue DeHaven Byrum was an aid at the hospital where some of the survivors were brought to in San Diego. What our men and women went through to protect our freedom is often forgotten.

I quickly scanned the posts, and didn't find anything on the period 1961-1963 including DesRon9's 2 year deployment with the 7th Fleet. I was a sonarman aboard the USS Duncan DDR874, a part of DesRon9. I spent a week aboard DeHaven in the South China Sea, and reportedly saved her from a trip back to Yokosuka. She also had the Variable Depth Sonar dome on board at the time. I can go into detail if anyone is interested.

I served on board the DeHaven in 1973 and 1974 as FTG3 and had the privilege of operating the stable element during the firing of the last 6 5".38 caliber guns to be fire by a warship in the Pacific Fleet. After 2 unsuccessful attempts to have all 6 guns fire in unison, we rechecked all circuits a second time to make sure all guns would fire in unison as a ship only gets 3 attempts to set such a record, which we were successful to complete the firing. We were told that only 23 copies of the color photo with the commanding officer's signature of the event were made and the color negative was destroyed, so the Department of the Navy only had a black and white photo. Don't know how many copies with the captain's signature are still in existence, I still have mine. If any member of the gun gang still have their copy I don't know. It is certainly a rare photo since it includes the captain's signature, wished I knew the value this photo since I was the lucky person who clicked the salvo warning key 3 times and on the third time clicked the firing key to accomplish this event, but it wasn't me alone, it took all members of each gun crew in each mount and the director operator to have all keys closed to perform this event. Thinking of selling my photo with a description of the process to fire all guns in unison to pay off my home since I am at retirement age. After leaving the DeHaven I transferred to The U.S.S. Welch (PG93) stationed out of Guam, the squadron of PG's was disbanded and relocated to different ports in the U.S. with the Welch and Tacoma being assigned to Norfolk,Va. While onboard the Welch I attained the rank of FTG2 and was released from the the Navy in March of 1975.

I was reading the raven DeHaven news and got confused. They were talking about the patrol plane that crashed and the ship picked the crew off of an island. The plane was towed out to an area at sea and the ship sank the plane with one 3" shell. When I reported to the ship in the shipard in Long Beach, she was just changing out the 40mm to 3", this was about May 1954. There were 3 of us that reported aboard, I was a EMFA, Jim O'Roke was a ICFA and I can't remember the name of the MRFA.Maybe someone remembers the visit to the yards. Thanks, Gene

Back on line again. I came back from WesPac in '73 on the Higbee in Long Beach and me and several others were sent TAD to the DeHaven to help out as they were decommissioning her and transferring the ship to the S. My father served aboard the USS DeHaven during WWII. He died 10/09/2007. He often told stories of his service in the navy, but I did not write the stories down. I would like to know more and write an account for my children and grandchildren.

My father explained the history of the USS DeHaven to my sister Natalie age 9 and myself age 14. As DeHaven's, thank you to all of the brave men who served on the ship. Without brave men like you, we wouldn't be free today. God bless all of you and your families for your sacrifices. Sincerely, Jessica and Natalie DeHaven

My Father was on the DeHaven during WW II amongst other ships, this was one of them. His name was Alois A Knotek 17 yrs young then and served as a water tender. he recalls the time when Helen DeHaven was there to christen the ship, when at the same time he lifted the hatch from below only to discover her bottom half up her dress as the officer yelled at him to get back down below.
