It was a patriotic and fullfilling time in my life to serve my country in the war effort. We had a great Captain (Donald Franz) and crew. I had fun razzing a Lieutenant about his beloved Green Bay Packers. I guess he's been vindicated since then with this year's Superbowl win. Donald Kovacs <kovacsdonald@yahoo.com> Peachtree City, GA USA - Thursday, November 04, 2010 at 14:50:40 (EDT) I regret to inform the Shipmates of the USS DeHaven, that my Mother, the wife of George H. Mom, had cancer, fighting the fight, but lost to a stroke and heart attack while on a trip, doing what she loved to do, travel, and being with friends. Mom was living with me the last few months of her life, I would not have had it any other way. Mom spoke fondly of Dads Shipmates as did Dad. Some like Plunket, I got to know. May all of your Shipmates past and present, being the Greatest Generation mankind will ever know. I think it is important for you to know, that your sacrifice, knowledge, along with the peace and comfort knowing what you accomplished, have the gratitude of this Son from two wonderful parents and their friends. Declassified naval gun fire support records indicate only three rounds were fired of 5 inch/.38 ordinance on that date. I have two questions. Why only three rounds and where can a copy of the unit citation be found? Additionally, it appears that only the ribbon can be displayed by those participants of the DeHaven who were on board on that specific date since the authorization for the actual medal is awarded to only individuals who were "in country". This term "in country" has been disputed for quite some time and the government has capitulated on "agent orange" claim litigation for those who were also conduction operations on rivers that were "in country" and for those who flew in airspace over Vietnam. However it doesn't look like this criteria applies towards the "awards application." I would appreciate as much feedback on this as possible. donald kovacs <kovacsdonald@yahoo.com> peachtree city, ga USA - Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 11:24:54 (EDT) On page 13 0f the May issue of VFW magizine it lists all of the Boats Ships etc that spent time up the Saigon River. His name is Manuel Lopez, if you can help me I would be thankful Just thinking about the "old days" ...
What a blast on board the DeHaven. Russ Killion, Bob Mattson, Lanny Holgerson. etc. etc. Anyone heard from Gary Richards? I served on board the DeHaven in 1973 and 1974 as FTG3 and had the privilege of operating the stable element during the firing of the last 6 5".38 caliber guns to be fire by a warship in the Pacific Fleet. After 2 unsuccessful attempts to have all 6 guns fire in unison, we rechecked all circuits a second time to make sure all guns would fire in unison as a ship only gets 3 attempts to set such a record, which we were successful to complete the firing. We were told that only 23 copies of the color photo with the commanding officer's signature of the event were made and the color negative was destroyed, so the Department of the Navy only had a black and white photo. Don't know how many copies with the captain's signature are still in existence, I still have mine. If any member of the gun gang still have their copy I don't know. It is certainly a rare photo since it includes the captain's signature, wished I knew the value this photo since I was the lucky person who clicked the salvo warning key 3 times and on the third time clicked the firing key to accomplish this event, but it wasn't me alone, it took all members of each gun crew in each mount and the director operator to have all keys closed to perform this event. Thinking of selling my photo with a description of the process to fire all guns in unison to pay off my home since I am at retirement age. After leaving the DeHaven I transferred to The U.S.S. Welch (PG93) stationed out of Guam, the squadron of PG's was disbanded and relocated to different ports in the U.S. with the Welch and Tacoma being assigned to Norfolk,Va. While onboard the Welch I attained the rank of FTG2 and was released from the the Navy in March of 1975. Served on board 1961-1963 as Electronics Material Officer and Communications Officer I was aboard from Jul'69 till Jan'72 would like to hear from shipmates.I was in the Sonar Gang and Bridge Detail on the firing line. what happened With regard to the Hedgehogs, as Newt points out, they were fired from
both the port and starboard launchers during the Dependent's Cruise in March of
1966. Pictures of the hedgehogs in the air and hitting the water (all
simultaneously as designed) are available in the Photos section of the Website
Under Dave Anderson's photos. I was reading the raven DeHaven news and got confused. They were talking
about the patrol plane that crashed and the ship picked the crew off of an
island. The plane was towed out to an area at sea and the ship sank the plane
with one 3" shell. When I reported to the ship in the shipard in Long Beach, she
was just changing out the 40mm to 3", this was about May 1954. There were 3 of
us that reported aboard, I was a EMFA, Jim O'Roke was a ICFA and I can't
remember the name of the MRFA.Maybe someone remembers the visit to the yards.
Thanks, Gene Coming from one who bears the name DeHaven, I find it interesting to see

the usual crazy move. I am still looking for information on my Uncle Frank
Felter. He served on the DeHaven when it went down in the Solomon islands. He
was married but there is a question as to whether or not Uncle Frank knew that
he was to be a father to a little girl. Well at this time I am willing to
concede that I will not hear from anyone that knew him. The ship was only 32

strenuous shaking down and then one month of alterations in Boston. My father
was injured during his time on the DeHaven - does anyone know what happened. How
could I find out what happened during that month? Thanks I just came from a Memorial Day Service for service members who lost their
lives at sea. I represented our association [DD469/727]. The various
associations each tossed flowers into Puget Sound as part of the service. A very
impressive service, a cannon, honor guard and band. It made this geezer proud to
have served at sea. Law Risken SO3...54-56 Back on line again. I came back from WesPac in '73 on the Higbee in Long Beach

decommissioning her and transferring the ship to the S. Koreans. I have the

taking her out past the breakwaters in Long Beach with the Korean crew that was
sent over and most of them were hugging the rails? Fair Winds everyone Enjoy reminising about my days aboard the Raven DeHaven. Would enjoy
