James Howard Smith 1925-2011

James SmithOn February 6th, James H. Smith 'Jim' completed his battle with cancer. Born July 27, 1925, in Salem, Oregon, he enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific on the USS Hawkbill and USS Cabezon until 1946. In 1948, he returned to active duty, having attended Pomona College, and later served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served aboard the USS DeHaven DD-727 from 1956-1958.

He met the love of his life in San Diego in the mid 1940s, and by 1950 had convinced her to become Mrs. Beatrice Smith. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Southern California in 1960, as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California (1963-1964).

After 26 years in the Navy, Jim retired as a Commander and earned a teaching credential from San Diego State University. While working as a substitute teacher, he and his wife enjoyed bird watching, traveling, and volunteering at the San Diego Natural History Museum. He continued these activities avidly throughout his life. Jim always loved nature and was an outspoken advocate for conservation, tolerance, education, and the rights of all people. He enjoyed the arts, and was a lifelong supporter of the La Jolla Playhouse.

After spending Saturday with family, he died peacefully at home Sunday morning. He leaves his daughters Evelyn Steppe, Kimberly Lowe and Karen Mendez; son-in-law, Cecil Steppe; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; generations of nieces and nephews; and many friends who will all miss him dearly. Friends and neighbors are welcome to join the family at Jim's home in Serra Mesa on Wednesday afternoon. His favorite desserts will be served. Celebrate his life at the San Diego Natural History Museum on Thursday February 17, from 2 till 4 p.m. His ashes will be returned to sea in mid-April.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Central Asian Institute or the San Diego Natural History Museum.
