John A. Maraviglia-2010

John Maravigilia on deck

John A. Maraviglia passed away in August 13, 2010 after a long battle with many illnesses. John was an RD3 aboard the DeHaven from 66-69 and a contributor to the Raven DeHaven newletter and this website. Below, he is fondly remembered by his shipmates:

I served with and well remember John Maraviglia.  MaryEllen and I extend our condolences to his family and friends

I was saddened to hear of the passing of John. I served with him aboard the DeHaven in 66 and part of 67. I was an RD3 and remember him well with all the gunfire support missions off the Vietnam coast. May he rest in God's kingdom and my prayers and condolences go out to his family

I am deeply saddened to hear of John's passing.  He and I worked together in CIC for 3 plus years and he was a pleasure to be around.  He was a smiling fellow with a great sense of humor.  I believe he was from the Chicago area if memory serves me correctly and he had a lot of friends onboard.  I enjoyed his recent writings in the Raven DeHaven.  I believe he was living in the San Jose, CA area.  I wished I would have been able to see him on one of my trips in that area.  I am so sad to see this fellow sailor pass.  May he rest in peace.

I served with John  Maraviglia and visited him several times in Chicago just after we finished our tour with the DeHaven in 1968-1969. Sharon and I attended his wedding in Chicago in 1971, I believe. I am sadden to hear of his passing and our prayers go out to his family and friends.

John was a real people person. He was full of life and enjoyed his time on the DeHaven. We spent many hours back then sharing experiences and growing up on board the DeHaven. We worked and played hard. We steamed together on numerous trips to Tokyo, spent many nights at the New Dream Japan on Honcho street, listened to the DeHaven band play at the Club Oro in Olongapo and always made it back to the ship to get the job done. Here’s to the good times Johnny, may God smile with you.

I am truly saddened by the loss of one who I was "elbow to elbow" with in CIC.  I served with John Maraviglia from 1966-1968 during many combat missions and only remember the good times because there were never any bad times.  His sense of humor and the intensity he always showed was and still is a constant reminder of what good friends are all about. More importantly why they are always here...still among us in memories that will forever bring us hope and laughter.  I will miss him.

Sure appreciate your words Don. He will be missed

I am stunned to learn of John's passing. He and I lived off ship in the barracks in Long Beach during a ship overhaul. Spent a lot of time on liberty together. Never a minute of rest with John. He always had us in stitches with something he was doing. He will be sorely missed.
God bless you John
