John Harlan Newsom MD 1940-2018

John Harlan Newsom, family physician of Yardley, Pa. died July 4, 2018. He was 78. He was born in Worland, Wyo., son of the late John Cecil Newsom and Arlene (Finch) Newsom. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn Cardall Newsom, and their sons’ families, John “Jack” Cardall and Jennifer Newsom, and Edward, and James Harlan and Susanna Newsom, and twins, David and John.

Dr. Newsom graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, served in the Navy for three years as an engineering officer aboard the destroyer U.S.S. De Haven (DD 727) and one year as an advisor on the Republic of Vietnam gunboat, the Hoa Lu, (PGM 608). He was awarded a Bronze Star with “V,” and other medals from the U.S. and Vietnamese governments.

He graduated from the University of Washington Medical School in Seattle, trained at The Doctors’ Hospital in Seattle, practiced in Newport, Ore., and Seattle, Wash. before moving to Yardley where he was a family physician for 44 years. He was an active member of the staff at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, Pa., where he served as Chair of Family Practice, President of the Medical Staff (three times), Vice President of Medical Affairs (twice), and a Trustee. He was president of the Bucks County Medical Society, a delegate to the Pennsylvania Medical Society, clinical assistant professor, Temple University Medical School, a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and member of the founding board of Pennswood Village.

Dr. Newsom was recognized a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine and “Top Rated Primary Care Physician” by Consumers’ Checkbook. He received the Legion of Honor from the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, was in Who’s Who in America, was President of Parents at Lawrenceville School, and was director of the Newtown Reliance Company for the Detecting and Apprehending of Horse Thieves and Other Villains.
