Blain Petty 1925-2014
Blaine Petty of Woodland completed his life’s work on April 24, 2014.
He was born in Bradleyville, Mo., on July 11, 1925. He moved with is family to Washington at a young age to graduate from Elma High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served in World War II and became an original “Tin Can Sailor” serving on the USS DeHaven DD-727.
In 1947 he moved to Woodland, where he was determined to make a difference. Living in a logging community, he saw a need. He owned and operated the Woodland Shaker Mill for more than 30 years. Being a lifelong baseball fan, he believed the community could do more for its youth, leading him to help start up Little League, Babe Ruth and finally the American Legion. Blaine went on to take part in the community by serving on the Woodland City Council and on the cemetery board. He also was a member of the Lions Club and the VFW.
Throughout the years he spent time doing the things that he enjoyed most in life: fishing and hunting, having coffee with his pals, traveling, playing cards and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart of 68 years, Jackie Farrar Petty; his son Jay (Jan) Petty; his daughter Beckie (Roger) Schurman; his granddaughter Breeann Petty of San Diego; and Reingard Jucker-Obwegeeser, a foreign student from Switzerland who was hosted in his home. He also has several nieces and nephews that he leaves behind, with many memories to pass on.
Blaine was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Petty; brothers Herman, James and Gene; and a sister, Velma Hora.
