Mark H. Schreffler 1923-2011

LEWISBURG — On Sunday morning, May 15, 2011, Mark H. Schreffler, 85, went home to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mark was originally from the Berrysburg area, where he spent his childhood and early adult years.

At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Navy, and completed his naval training at the Naval Training Station in Sampson, N.Y. He served during World War II aboard the USS DeHaven DD-727, whose missions included the attack on Tokyo Bay shortly before the war ended. Mark completed his tour in the Navy following the end of the war and returned to his home in Pennsylvania.

After his return home, Mark married Gertie W. Snyder, of Hickory Corners, and moved to Williamsport. Mark attended the Williamsport Technical School, now Penn College, and completed the building trades program in 1949.

He began his own construction business, Mark H. Schreffler, Builder, building his first home in 1950. Mark and Gertie began a family, and as the family grew, so did the building business. Over 10 years, Mark and Gertie had six children. As their family grew, Mark would build another larger house, using his own home as a model for others. During his career he constructed or remodeled over 300 residential and commercial buildings, primarily in the Williamsport and Loyalsock Township area. Mark and Gertie’s oldest child, Jay, currently resides in New Mexico, with his wife Resa, along with their children, Cara, J.D. and his wife Melissa, and Jayson. Mark and Gertie’s second son, Stephen, died in infancy. Their third child, Susan, currently resides in Colorado with her husband, Stew, and their children, Neal, and Melissa and her husband, Eric, and their children, Jeep and Imogene. Mark and Gertie’s fourth child, Dale, also resides in New Mexico, with his wife Di. Their fifth child, Linda, resides in Milton with her husband, Brett. The youngest of the children, Patsy, currently resides in Florida, with her husband Edwin, and her children, Stephen, and Allison and her husband Nathan, and Edwin’s son, Adam, who resides in Georgia. Mark’s wife, Gertie, also resides in Florida.

Mark and Gertie separated in the early 1970s and were later divorced. Mark then married Ann Carter Flock, and lived in the Williamsport area until 1995 when they became full time residents of Venice, FL. They returned to Pennsylvania in 2005, and later separated in 2006, and divorced in 2007. Ann currently lives in the Hershey area. Ann’s daughter Lynn, lives in the Harrisburg area with her husband, Howard, and has two children, Ashley and Adam, and their families. Ann’s son, Scott, lives in Florida, with his wife, Betty, and their children, Leigh Ann and Laura, and their families.

Mark will also be missed by his sister, Mary Kissinger who lives in Loyalsock Township; his sister and brother-in-law, Daisy and Harry Yeagley who live in Florida; his brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Millie Schreffler who live in Hughesville; his sister, Phyllis Hilldale, who lives in Montoursville; and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Mark donated his body to medical research through the Humanity Gifts Registry of the State of Pennsylvania, for the purpose of furthering medical education and study.
